About Motion Ventures

Accelerating technology adoption across the maritime value chain

Motion Ventures ( is a S$30m consortium-driven venture capital fund that makes strategic investments and offers tailored support to early-stage startups tackling challenges in the maritime value chain. The fund’s structure offers startups unprecedented access to key maritime firms through the consortium of corporate investors, while anchor investors can participate in investment evaluations in a de-risked manner.

Anchor investors include Wilhelmsen, a 160 years old global maritime conglomerate that manages more than 50% of the world’s merchant fleet; and HHLA, a 140 years old company that is one of the largest port logistics operators in Europe. Motion Ventures is a venture partner for the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and NUS Enterprise’s PIER71 program, and is also backed by SEEDs Capital, the investment arm of Enterprise Singapore.

Motion Ventures at a Glance

Motion Ventures launched in February 2021, led by General Partner Shaun Hon. It is steered by a board made up of Michael Pomerleau and Nicklas Viby Fursund from Rainmaking.

First venture firm to extend support for the new Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD). Launched by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, aims to help reduce shipping’s greenhouse gas emissions, implement identified decarbonisation pathways and create new business opportunities.

Michael is an entrepreneur and investor with more than two decades experience in the maritime and logistics sector and a wide network of investors and corporates across Asia. 


He has led and executed multi-billion dollar transactions including mergers and acquisitions and green-field projects and has advised on C-suite and board level on technology, growth and investment strategy. Michael has also founded and funded several tech ventures.


Before Motion Ventures he also led multiple transport infrastructure investments with A. P. Moller - Maersk as the former Investment Director for Greater China.

Nicklas Viby Fursund

Merging corporate industry experience with 10 years as serial entrepreneur founding digital and traditional businesses, Nicklas understands and bridges industry problems with tech solutions in the startup and corporate world.


Nicklas has worked with over 60 industry corporations on innovation, startups and investing, and consulted shipping lines, terminals, governments and investors focusing on ports, green efforts and digitalisation, independently and on behalf of BCG, McKinsey and AT Kearney.


Prior to Motion Ventures, Nicklas was a member of the small partner group that scaled Rainmaking it into a global venture building and innovation player that accelerated and invested in 950 startups. Nicklas was previously also Director of Maersk Line’s strategy office, where he ran restructures and what was arguably then the world’s largest emission reduction project in shipping and was Managing Director of Operations, optimising supply chains and a $ 1bn budget

Prior to Motion Ventures, Shaun was a Director at Rainmaking where he launched the Ocean Ventures Alliance - an innovation advisory network bringing together more than 40 industry leaders across the maritime value chain from companies including Saudi Aramco’s Bahri, MAERSK, HHLA, Wilhelmsen and more. 


Shaun has managed a S$250 million portfolio and spearheaded investments into early stage Seed to Series A venture capital investments across AI and Deep Tech startups.


Shaun has spent more than half a decade helping companies develop engineering solutions in the industry. He worked in the automotive industry where he led performance design in electric vehicles for clients in multinational organisations such as Amazon, BMW, Ford Motor Company, among others. He has also worked in Royal Dutch Shell, optimising well flow performance.
